Shell Alexia S5 and Shell Alexia S6 to be introduced to the shipping market

Shell will be expanding its range of marine lubricants from December onwards. The oil major will be introducing Shell Alexia S5 and Shell Alexia S6 in phases from December 2013.

The products, available at Busan, Fujairah, Houston, Rotterdam, Singapore, and selected Chinese shipyards by January 2014, will be stocked at other locations by middle of 2014. Shell Alexia S5 and Shell Alexia S6 have a base number (BN) of 80 and 100 respectively. The products feature Shell's advanced triple-action technology to help protect engines from increased acid stress and corrosive wear.

According to the firm, increased acid condensation of up to 300% can be found in new engine designs that operate with higher cylinder pressures and lower cylinder wall temperatures.

However, the lubricants' triple-action technology is able to protect marine engines by blocking, neutralising and cleaning the acids from machinery. "Shell's advanced triple-action technology has been developed through a deep understanding of oil stress in 2-stroke engines," it says. "For operators of the latest engines, our technology helps to deliver reduced wear and improved cleanliness, which, in turn, mean lower maintenance costs and longer engine life."
